The crashed Spit Mk IA was the mount of Sqn Ldr Stephenson, CO of 19 Squadron and a pre-war Cranwell contemporary of Douglas Bader's. He was shot down during the Squadron's first full formation combat, near Dunkirk, on May 26th, 1940. P/O Watson was KIA in the same engagement. Like Bader, Stephenson ended up seeing the war out in Colditz.
