I have just come across the Deutsche Wochenschau 1940-08-17 Wir fahren gegen England on YouTube here and I believe that the Stuka escort was provided by I.(J)/LG2 (see the 2.(J)/LG2 emblem in the aft fuselage). If I am not mistaken, the emblem we were searching for is clearly visible on the Bf109E-3 "Black 11", most likely as a personal emblem.

Sidney

Some further info on this old thread - with reference to Jochen Prien and others "JV der Deutschen LW 1934-1945", Part 3, Page 399, Photo 341 - this indeed was the Bf109E-3 "Black 11" W.Nr. 699 of 2.(J)/LG2. Pilot's personal emblem on the engine cowling, with the script beneath it being written perhaps in Latin, is unfortunately unreadable.

Definitely Spanish - "Arriba el xxxxx" - maybe a Legion Condor veteran.

A number of the I.(J)/LG2 pilots were indeed the Legion Condor veterans, so yes, the text is actually likely to have been written in Spanish.
