Now, 'accompanying' the same set is a beautiful artwork of an Iraqi MiG-21MF - indeed, perhaps the most famous Iraqi MiG-21MF (though also one that remains largely unknown outside Iraq): serial number 1019.
The aircraft was deployed in Syria during war with Israel, in October 1973, when one of pilots flying it claimed a Mirage-kill; and then, in September 1980, it was flown by another pilot who claimed a kill against an Iranian F-4E. Correspondingly, it was the only MiG-21 - ever, no matter where, no matter what air force - to wear a kill marking for an Israeli, and an Iranian jet.
Sadly, sticking to the usual practice of such companies, Eduard didn't credit its source of reference: the cover (and the 'artworks' section) of the book Arab MiGs Volume 6. Ignoring references to anything signed by that 'controversial Tom Cooper' is simply beyond 'fashionable' nowadays....almost as fashionable as 'correcting' extremely precise colour references provided in diverse of my publications… thus, and hand at heart: the hair-splitter in me would say the green colour on the artwork attached below is 'slightly too green' and other colours wrong too (original camo pattern was in BS381C/388 BEIGE and BS381C/437 OLIVE DRAB, and the underside should be painted in LIGHT ADMIRALTY GREY - yes, a BS381C-colour No. 697, and not in some undetermined 'grey'…)
But, well, it's simply a spectacular artwork, and - especially for an 'Arab MiG' - it's unusually authentic, too (that's the wonder I mentioned at the start). Thus, my hat's off for that artist's work!
BTW on the photo of the MiG-21bis 414x, with pilots (from No. 17 Squadron): kneeling, second from the right, is Captain Ayad Abdul Sattar. He claimed an IRIAF F-14A as shot down, sometimes in autumn 1980, and while flying MiG-21FL '681'. The photo was taken after that unit was re-equipped with the batch of MiG-21bis' acquired from the USSR in 1983-1984.
Tie Irácke FL-ká, už boli okolo roku 1980 dosť "ojazdené" a stiahnuté k pokračovaciemu výcviku k Letke 17.Export (Third world) model of the MiG-21PF. Downgraded from baseline MiG-21PF with older and less powerful R11F-300 engine, no provision for carrying RS-2US beam-riding missiles and a simplified, downgraded version of the RP-21 radar, designated R1L. Wide-chord fin and brake chute fairing at its base. Built under license in India as the Type 77.
