Being mainly interested in aircraft camouflage and markings from the World War II era, I’m always curious about the new additions to the Mushroom/Stratus’ White (Rainbow) Series. That was also the case with the first volume of ‘Yugoslav Fighter Colours 1918-1941’ authored by Ognjan Petrović and Djordje Nikolić, especially as both these names were already known to me: Mr. Petrović had illustrated the truly excellent ‘Messerschmitt Bf 109. The Yugoslav Story’, whilst Mr. Nikolić co-authored valuable publications on the Dornier Do 22 and Rogozarski IK-3. The result of their cooperation is also not disappointing: on 192 pages of Vol.1 we find a plethora of unique information which in most cases is likely available in English for the very first time, accompanied with dozens of photos (in large part of surprisingly good quality) and fairly nicely rendered colour profiles. The aircraft covered in Vol.1 are Nieuport 24 & 27, Spad S.7 & S.13, Albatros D.III Ba.253 (Oef), Phönix D.I & D.II, Aviatik (Berg) D.I, Ansaldo SVA 5, Bristol F.2b Fighter, Dewoitine D.1, D.9 & D.27, Avia BH-33E and Potez 25 A2. In each case we are offered with a short story of the type and its use in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, followed by the description of its camouflage & markings and tables of its basic characteristics. My only complaint would be that the colours are usually specified in a rather general manner, but then it is no surprise that it is very difficult, if not impossible, to determine the exact shades used in that early period of aviation – we can therefore agree with Mr. Petrović’s interpretations presented on the profiles or make own choices on the basis of the textual description. Not to be forgotten are the appendices, which deal with the evolution of markings & insignia in 1918-41 period (illustrated with a number of drawings from the era and several photos), camouflage and colours, unit structures, aviation ranks and abbreviations used. Also included are a reproduction of a pre-war pilot map of the Kingdom and a listing of all fighter aircraft types used there. The latter allows to determine what types will be covered in Vol.2: Hawker Fury & Hurricane, Ikarus IK-2, Rogozarski IK-3, Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-3a & Bf 110 C-4, and Potez 630/631. I warmly recommend this book and really look forward to obtaining Vol.2 which, according to the publisher, is being printed right now!

The 6th Luftwaffe Bombardment Squadron remains a little-known unit due to its relatively short existence. It was indeed put together with great difficulty by an order of October 1941, this squadron having been designed to support KG 2 in its sporadic operations to harass Great Britain. Its training was slow and laborious for lack of staff. The poverty of the Luftwaffe (clearly visible at that time) explains why the entire III./LG 1 had to be recalled from the eastern front to include it in the new squadron. It was not until August 1942 that the first Ju 88 of KG 6 operated across the Channel, however, the squadron was immediately engaged in the fighting at Dieppe during the bloody landing of the Canadians. In November, the unit - shared between France and the Netherlands - served as a back-up to occupy the French Free Zone. Concomitantly, its best crews were called up in an “Einsatzgruppe” sent urgently to the Mediterranean in support of the Afrika Korps.
At the beginning of 1943, KG 6 found itself torn between Italy, Denmark and France from which some action continued to be launched on Great Britain. In June, however, in full reconversion on Ju 188, two Gruppe were withdrawn from France to return to fight in Italy. At the end of 1943, the II./KG 6 was also sent to fight in the Aegean Sea.
It was not until the beginning of 1944 that the squadron could finally be fully engaged in what had been its end: the attacks on England. KG 6 took part in Operation "Steinbock" where its losses were severe. This shortly before ‘Overlord’, the Normandy landings, which would also cut deep cuts in the numbers. Retreating "foot by foot", KG 6 fell back on the Reich before being dissolved in September 1944 because of its heavy losses. The squadron was to rise from its ashes, however, as KG (J) / 6, a fighter unit equipped with, among other things, Me 262 jet engines.
In the following months, KG (J) / 6 would experience the last upheavals of the Luftwaffe until the capitulation of the Third Reich, its numbers gradually shrinking. Its pilots nonetheless fought until early May 1945.

Jen tak mimochodem, teď bylo na Book depository "free shipping worldwide", tak jsem to risknul a objednal tři knihy. První mi došla v pátek, vyzvedával jsem si jí na poště. Žádné jiné poplatky po mně pošta nechtěla. Uvidíme, zda mi něco ještě nepřijde navíc, ale snad ne. Teď čekám na tu druhou zásilku. Předpokládám, že dojde příští týden.

Book Depository always had free shipping. Note that regardless of the number of books ordered at once, they usually ship each book separately. In the previous years the usual turnaround was about two weeks, in 2021 it usually takes three weeks to receive the order, at least shipped to Poland (2021 "research trial' on 9 books thus far :>)

Reprint původního vydání z roku 2016 a 2017. Knihy formátu 254x180 mm s polotuhými deskami s chlopní (komixová vazba). Knihy prezentují fotografie pořizované na materiál Kodachrome v daném období. Knihy obsahují výhradně barevné snímky a kapitoly jsou řazeny chronologicky dle jednotlivých období a bojišť. Texty jsou fundované a díky kvalitnímu křídovému papíru je většina fotografií znamenitě reprodukována. Z mojeho pohledu jsou to vynikající zdroje pro studium kamufláží, opotřebení a dalšího.

P.S. Knihy jsem objednal u Book Depository (Velká Británie) v jednom e-mailu a dorazily zabalená každá zvlášť s razízkem nizozemské královské pošty Patrně kvůli nákladům knihkupec objednávky dělí a posílá takovým zvláštním způsobem. Opět jsem neplatil žádné poplatky v podobě celního řízení a DPH.
